Celebrating the UAE’s 50th National Day: A Tribute to Wildlife and Conservation Efforts

On December 2, 2021, the UAE celebrated its 50th National Day, marking half a century since the unification of the emirates under one banner. This golden jubilee was not only a time for reflecting on the nation’s remarkable achievements in infrastructure, culture, and economic progress but also an opportunity to celebrate its unparalleled commitment to protecting the environment and preserving its unique biodiversity.

A Nation Born from Unity

The foundation of the United Arab Emirates in 1971 marked the unification of six emirates—Abu Dhabi, Dubai, Sharjah, Umm al-Quwain, Fujairah, and Ajman—with Ras al-Khaimah joining the federation in 1972. Under the visionary leadership of His Highness Sheikh Zayed bin Sultan Al Nahyan, the UAE not only established a strong political and economic foundation but also set the stage for sustainable environmental practices.

His Highness Sheikh Zayed viewed nature as more than just a resource; he saw it as a fundamental part of the UAE’s identity. His philosophy remains etched in history:

“We cherish our environment because it is an integral part of our country, our history, and our heritage.”

These words laid the foundation for the UAE’s exceptional conservation policies and its emphasis on safeguarding nature for future generations.

A Rich and Diverse Wildlife

Despite its rapid urbanization and modern development, the UAE has remained a sanctuary for a stunning array of wildlife. It is home to:

  • Arabian gazelles, gracefully navigating the open desert.
  • The critically endangered Arabian leopard, a predator now extinct in much of the Middle East but still holding on in the UAE.
  • The iconic Arabian Oryx, which was brought back from the brink of extinction thanks to national conservation programs.
  • Marine life including dugongs, green turtles, and vibrant coral reefs.

To date, the UAE has established 49 nature reserves, covering approximately 15.5% of its total area, to protect its unique ecosystems and promote eco-tourism.

The Arabian Oryx: A Success Story in Conservation

Among the UAE’s most notable environmental achievements is the rescue of the Arabian Oryx, a species that faced extinction by the mid-20th century due to overhunting and habitat destruction. Recognizing the importance of this species, Sheikh Zayed took bold steps to save it.

In 1968, he initiated a captive breeding program in Al Ain, which marked the beginning of the Arabian Oryx’s recovery. By 1978, four Arabian Oryx were relocated to Sir Bani Yas Island, where Sheikh Zayed established a breeding sanctuary. This island became a hub for conservation, with the population of Arabian Oryx growing steadily.

Today, the UAE hosts the largest Arabian Oryx population in the world, with over 4,000 individuals. This success has become a global model for species conservation and underscores the UAE’s dedication to protecting its natural heritage.

The Plight and Protection of the Arabian Leopard

The Arabian leopard, a rare and majestic predator, has faced near extinction across the Middle East. During the 1990s, uncontrolled hunting drastically reduced its population. Recognizing the urgency of this crisis, conservation efforts in the UAE were spearheaded by the Arabian Leopard Trust (ATL), established in 1992.

The ATL’s efforts gained momentum with the establishment of a breeding center in the Hajjar Mountains, on land donated by H.H. Sheikh Dr. Sultan bin Mohammed Al-Qassimi, ruler of Sharjah. This facility focused on breeding and rehabilitating Arabian leopards in their natural habitat. Today, the species is protected by law in the UAE, and although its population remains critically endangered, these initiatives offer hope for its survival.

His Highness Sheikh Zayed: A Champion of Conservation

The late Sheikh Zayed bin Sultan Al Nahyan’s passion for the environment extended beyond practical conservation efforts. He regarded the desert, its plants, and its animals as blessings that deserved careful stewardship. His leadership led to the preservation of many endangered species and the sustainable use of natural resources.

In his words:

“The environment is a dear part of our heritage, civilization, and future. It represents a great emotional value in our consciousness, so we must exert every effort to protect it.”

Sheikh Zayed’s holistic approach to conservation integrated both traditional values and modern science, creating a legacy that continues to inspire environmental policies in the UAE and beyond.

A Personal Note of Gratitude

Living in the UAE has given me the opportunity to witness its incredible biodiversity—from the enchanting Arabian Oryx roaming the deserts to the resilience of the Arabian leopard in its mountainous strongholds.

“I feel a deep connection to the UAE’s wildlife, and Sheikh Zayed’s commitment to the environment is my guiding light. His values remind me that, like the Union of the Emirates, we must unite to protect our planet. His Highness Sheikh Mohammed bin Zayed Al Nahyan’s dedication to continuing this legacy is an inspiration to us all.”

This National Day, let us honor the UAE’s remarkable achievements by pledging to protect our natural world. The spirit of unity that brought the Emirates together can also unite us in the fight to save our planet.

Celebrating UAE’s Environmental Achievements on National Day

While the 50th National Day was marked by festivities, cultural performances, and tributes to the country’s history, it was also an opportunity to celebrate the UAE’s dedication to environmental protection. The nation’s ability to balance urban development with conservation is a testament to its visionary leadership and commitment to sustainability.

As an environmental enthusiast and advocate, I find inspiration in Sheikh Zayed’s vision. The UAE’s efforts remind us that we can achieve economic growth without compromising the health of our ecosystems.

Together for a Greener Future

As we celebrate the UAE’s 50th National Day, let us also celebrate its rich natural heritage and the incredible efforts made to preserve it. With Sheikh Zayed’s environmental philosophy as our beacon, we can work together to build a sustainable future—for the UAE and for the world.

Mutahid—United, we can save our planet. 🌍
